Become a “Pathfinder” – Create a Better and Fairer World

Till about a year ago, AI was not on the blazing growth path it is today. It has happened with the arrival of ChatGPT. Every inflexion point brings with it many opportunities which we should capitalise as human beings.  We are standing at that instant in time across billions of years, from which we can make a path-breaking difference to all life on earth. 

 

Till now most decisions were taken by human beings. For example, if a bank official was to approve a loan, it was left to his discretion and evaluation whether to approve it or not. The bank official, being a human being, either knowingly or unknowingly, was influenced by his own nature, friendships, enmities, upbringing, family, religious and community group contexts while making the decision of loan approval. The human process of decision making introduced flaws and biases into our lives. This took away deserved opportunities from some and gave them to others not so deserving causing bitterness and enmity disturbing the peace and progress of human kind. This flawed decision making generally went unnoticed except sometimes in reviews and audits. This resulted in increased unfairness, endless strife and struggle.  

 

Today, we have AI stepping up to make these decisions for us. Many people fear that AI-based decision making could be unfair and the worry about it. I say the opposite. I think we have an opportunity to make our world a fairer and better place than it ever was. 

 

Why do I say this? Because most of the day to day repetitive decisions being taken by human beings today will be taken by AI systems in the not too distant future. These AI decisions are being programmed into machine language algorithms by the young people of today. Yes, by the young people of today who are coders, data scientists, data labellers, testers, evaluators, domain specialists and auditors.

 

I appeal to the young people of today to code fair, unbiased, ethical and correct outcomes. Else you are writing unfair, biased and sub-optimal code which will be cast in concrete since AI code is rarely revisited except to fix bugs. By then the damage is already done. 


When you are coding, you are not developing code for any person or community or colour or creed but for all. So be large-hearted and code for all.  You are not reacting to any action, you are cool-headed, rational while coding. You have time to think and do the right thing. One’s inherent nature and biases, dislikes are not required to play any role in your coding. It is a one-time activity, there are no provocations here, only logical and rational code for the good of all. You are the Creator, create something you will be proud of!


The youth of today are a smarter and fairer lot than we were in our time.The greater exposure brought about by technology based information revolution has ensured this. I am certain the youth can code AI fairly and ethically and make that unmatched positive difference to our world.
